On environmentalising local knowledge: Report from the landscape design research area

I was invited to give a presentation at the Architectural Institute of Japan Congress (Hokkaido), Rural Planning Section, Panel Discussion: 'Can we find the local form again? The documents (57 slides) used in the discussion are now available.

The table of contents is as follows

1. introduction
2. overview of landscape design
3. the role of the environment
4. organising the relationship between environmental dynamics and regional divisions
5. about local knowledge
6. case study report: trial of environmentalising local knowledge
7. thoughts on the division of labour with architecture, etc.
8. thoughts on assessing the quality of landscape

In particular, with regard to 8, I think I have been able to step in and write about something that I had only vaguely considered before.
I quote it from slide (leaves 53-57).

It is important not only for those involved in landscape design, but also for the people who are the main actors in the formation of the local milieu, that the assessment of the quality of the landscape is made more deeply and precisely on the basis of a dynamic understanding of the local environmental conditions.

This would reduce the number of people involved in landscape design making unnecessary changes to the local environment in favour of creative expressions based on personal aesthetic preferences.

If, before that, consumers are able to find objects of interest and interest in the local landscape (which can be regarded as a landscape overlaid with memories, impressions and attachments based on their own subjectivity and experience) in detail, they will no longer desire unnecessary changes to the environment, both as the main actors in the formation of the local climate and as the sovereign actors in local self-government.

If people's evaluation of the quality of the landscape changes, the relationship between people, the region, the climate and the living world may change and the quality of everyday life for people may become richer, even if the environment is not altered.

The responsibility of those involved in landscape design should be fulfilled from this point of view.

This can be aimed at by carefully communicating the results of dynamic understanding of local environmental conditions to the people who are the main actors in shaping the local milieu.

I continue my discussion of the above in my next paper, which I hope you will read again.

Practical reports and issues in landscape design based on landscape ecology

English below

The presentation material (30 slides in total) from the Webinar of the Japan Association for Landscape ecology 'Considering green infrastructure from a design perspective', held on 10 July 2022, is now available.

The aim of the presentation was to (text extracted from slides 2-10).

-

The presenter considers landscape design to be the art of setting up places for people in nature, and approaches research and practice in this way. Landscape design should thus be a technology that conditions the relationship between people and nature, nature and society, as well as between people and society, but this presentation will focus mainly on the relationship between people, society and nature.

A brief review of the origins of landscape design, beginning in the USA in the 19th century, shows that one of its objectives was to secure the benefits that people derive from nature in modern cities, where the environment is deteriorating.

These human benefits from nature are nowadays called ecosystem services and are organised as consisting of provisioning, regulating and cultural services and the infrastructure services required for their maintenance.

Landscape design1) was introduced to Japan in the Taisho period (1912-1926) when it was translated as 'landscaping'.

Perhaps due to the way the terms 'landscaping' and 'design' are understood, 'landscape design' in Japan sometimes seems to give priority to the manipulation of spatial form, while at the same time seeking to fulfil practical and psychological functions, while basically responding to the local environmental conditions.
The presenter sees this as an aspect in which the concern for the manipulation of spatial form sometimes takes precedence.

In the past, the same was true for the presenter. However, I now aim to design landscapes appropriately based on landscape ecology, defined as 'the scientific elucidation of the structure and function of landscapes, their changes and their relationship to society, and the use of these scientific results to propose ecologically superior land use practices'
